
I was sent here to keep the gold prospectors out of the Black Hills. It was Indian land. Now I'm supposed to let prospectors in and get the Indians out, and settled onto their
reservations. I don't argue with my orders, but I wish those politicians and generals in Washington would make up their minds. And if truth be told, I've lost more of my
soldiers to the lure of gold than to Indian fighting.
